Timeline

The Rosenbaum House is a single-family house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and built for Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum in Florence, Alabama. A noted example of his Usonian house concept, it is the only Wright building in Alabama, and is one of only 26 pre-World War II Usonian houses. The Hanna Houseis built primarily of native redwood and San Jose concrete, brick andglass. In fact, there is no paintpresent in the house as all exposed surfaces are comprised of those fourmaterials. Wright, as he usually did, blurred the lines between interior and exterior spaces. Built on 1.5 acres, thesingle-story house features numerous tile terraces, built-in furnishings, anopen floor plan and a central clerestory.

Wright's initial plans called for flat terrain, but the lot the Hannas purchased was hilly. Cost overruns meant that the original $15,000 price tag ballooned to over $37,000 ($784,194 adjusted for inflation). Additionally, the Hannas discovered that their lot encompassed a portion of the San Andreas Fault. Wright, whose Imperial Hotel had survived the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, was undaunted.[4] Unfortunately, the home was severely damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Wright's Usonian houses were designed for middle-income families. They featured indoor-outdoor connections and were often built in an "L" shape.

Greer was a Hollywood fashion and costume designer. Photos and text by Michael Locke. The house became an integral part as the nursery of the adjacent Valley Presbyterian Church, built in 1970, still owner as of 2022.

As in the early Usonian houses, Wright used wooden walls inside, made out of boards and battens. The large boards were secured with screws to the structural blocks, and the surfaces were defined by a sequence of horizontally placed boards and their intermediate joints. Located at the rear of the main house, it reflects the hexagonal pattern in which the entire site has been designed.
