Abandoning for the first time the square or rectangle in favor of the hexagon for the grid and plan, Wright found a new freedom and flexibility in the Hanna House. Walls joined at 120-degree obtuse angles create an interior of fluid space and unrestricted views. The house grew through successive additions to encompass 4,825 square feet. It was Wright’s first non-rectangular design and… it drove the construction crews absolutely nuts. There isn’t a ninety-degree anywhere in the house. The guest house is located in the back and slightly higher up the hill. This is where the full-time caretaker of the house lives nowadays. It has the same floor-to-ceiling segmented windows as the main house. As in almost any of Wright‘s homes, the chimney, which in this particular project is, of course, hexagonal, acts as a central core. Wright designed a gasoline station for the Broadacre City project in the 1930s, Wright approached Best Oil company owner, Ray Lindholm, a former client, with the idea of building a gas station in his hometown.
