Kaldi's Social House Silver Spring

Behind the counter sits both a La Marzocco Strada MP and a Modbar AV system for pulling espresso. Coffee is ground on both a Nuova Simonelli Mythos and Mazzer Robur E grinders. As a small business owner, I knew that customer service requires a genuine connection between my co-workers and customers, so I invest in both sides. I takes my time to personally train and empower them so that the people who make the coffee are just as happy as those who order it. For me, this is not just an investment in the future of the coffee shop, but an investment in the community. Since opening in 2014, the staff has grown from four to over 30, and the store has expanded to more than double its original café space.

It feels like one spacious living room, with a long coffee bar in the center of the space like a hearth. Was reminded of my old review and had to revise it, since this place turned from a chill coffee house to a loud unpleasant quasi-dance club. The coffee, tea and food and food are still great but it’s not a nice place to hang out anymore. Kaldi’s Social House is a business with an emphasis on being welcoming, and a determination to build and support community.

Kaldi’s Social House

When the customer comes in, I don’t want them to think about getting coffee, but to think they are supporting the community…I want to be welcoming – I want to create relationships with customers. After months of preparation, Kaldi’s Social House opened in 2014. Located just off Georgia Avenue, Kaldi’s has large windows, with a glass door Inside, the lighting is muted, and the concrete floors are complimented by oversized leather chairs and wooden tables.

Entering the glass doors of the white brick building you are greeted by a warm and incredibly spacious cafe. Brick walls are painted gray and adorned with illustrations of coffee cups and wine glasses—this is a true day-to-night gathering space. The story of Kaldi and coffee in Ethiopia takes up a prominent space on one wall. In the center of the cafe sits a long coffee counter which divides the coffeehouse.

The front half of the shop is brightened by large windows and feels light and airy. Overstuffed leather chairs and long tables encourage communal seating. The back half feels more intimate and lounge-like, with deep armchairs, less natural light, and a gas fireplace set into the wall. The goal is to make the shop feel like a community living room. On both ends of the cafe are staircases which lead to a nighttime bar complete with a retractable glass roof. On the way out of the cafe patrons are reminded to “grow our community,” and “shop local,” by a decal near the door.

After immigrating from Ethiopia in 2008, Haile began to feel that there was a place for a coffeehouse that emphasized a social experience and was influenced by his Ethiopian roots. After opening Kaldi’s Coffee and becoming popular with the local residents, he soon found that there was room to keep his shop growing. The space has been expanded and renovated several times and has evolved into its current state as a daytime cafe and nighttime bar (follow them on Instagram for COVID updates). With a solid staff to hold down the fort in Silver Spring, Haile set his sights on opening a sister social house in Arlington, Virginia.

Food was dry and tough, definitely overcooked the beef. I don’t mind spending good money on good food, but I felt a bit of buyers remorse after eating here. Overpriced for the quality in my opinion. Regular galbi in Korea is cut differently.

It’s fitting that galbi jjim was previously reserved for Korea’s upper class. After all, Young-hee Shon’s restaurant, Seoungbukdong is named for a wealthy neighborhood in Seoul, home to the Presidential Palace. However, even though her steamed beef short rib may be stately, the food and service are warm and welcoming.

The meat is marinated with soy sauce and sugar, then steamed and braised with mild Japanese peppers. The savory dish is served in a homey bowl, scissor-cut so the chunks are easier to eat, and dusted with sesame seeds. Eat the galbi with mixed rice, which incorporates wild grains and red bean. Even though Soban’s setting is fairly simple, Si Woo Yoo has managed to build destination status with Angelenos who crave refined Korean food and people feting out-of-towners. The chef-owner is a master at building sauces and braising proteins in those sauces, whether the main ingredients come from the sea or land.

Galbi means “ribs” in Korean, and is a popular Korean dish served in many places. LA galbi is a style of galbi – barbecued beef short ribs – cut thinly (about ¼ inch thick) across the bones. Dwit Gol Mok (aka DGM) is a legendary Koreatown dive with a semi-hidden entrance, worn wood booths, and very few inches of wall that haven’t been tagged. The owners debuted a far nicer version, DGM Kisasikdang, in May 2016. Enter through the back, beneath a red awning, and find grey, orange and corrugated metal walls with two flat screen TVs. Don’t even think of uncapping a Sharpie in this setting.

Your best bet just might be their braised oxtail and short rib stew, which combines two cuts of tender beef - the largest portion could feed a football team. The scalding metal pot sears the chunks of meat and vegetable that settle at the base, to magical effect. The high standards clearly haven’t affected business - actors, K-pop stars, athletes and anonymous ballers continue to fill tables, which all tout charcoal grills. Their prime beef short rib is available marinated or undressed.

Nothing too bad to say and just normal tasting food.

Huge chunks of beef luxuriate in a fire-red sludge of soy sauce, sugar, garlic and “other vegetables,” which render the meat tender while imparting powerful flavor down to the bone. A sauce this concentrated calls for an adjacent bowl of steamed white rice. Genwa proved popular in Mid-Wilshire thanks to plentiful banchan and high-quality meat. The Restaurant Row spinoff is even fancier, with alternating white and red panels along La Cienega Boulevard, a pink façade, and wood-framed booths. Prime galbi is available in galbi tang (soup) and galbi jjim (braised with vegetables and herbs). Galbi are unseasoned short ribs for grilling.

Either way, they carve a diamond pattern in the meat, which maximizes tenderness. Wrap the results in lettuce with fermented bean paste, raw garlic and jalapenos, which pack a savory punch. The first time I tried LA galbi was about 20 years ago when I visited my sister living in LA. She prepared LA galbi for me and my family. I enjoyed the galbi a lot even though I was a little surprised to see the short ribs cut thinly and across the bone. Korean cuisine is a feast for the senses, combining bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and a rich cultural heritage.

From the tangy taste of kimchi to the juicy tenderness of bulgogi, Korean food has something to offer everyone. Whether you're a fan of spicy dishes or looking for a healthy meal option, Korean cuisine is a must-try for anyone looking to explore new and exciting flavors. Short ribs are popular in cuisines worldwide, but Korean kitchens have a particular knack for preparing galbi, as said ribs are known. In Korean (or Korean-American) culture, special occasions and celebrations call for galbi. Short ribs - frequently beef, but possibly pork - are braised, grilled, steamed, shredded and more, with delicious results. Read on and discover some of the best Korean galbi dishes in Los Angeles.

It is perfectly safe to consume our products if they have “freezer burn”. You should follow the heating instructions as you normally would. Keftedes are Greek meatballs, sometimes made with a mixture of chickpeas and sardines. For our vegetarian version, we substitute the sardines with feta cheese, which gives the keftedes a deeply savory note while keeping them meat-free. Based on the chickpea and sardine keftedes from “Smashing Plates” by London chef Maria Elia, this version is just as flavorful. In this recipe from “Tuesday Nights Mediterranean,” which features weeknight-friendly meals from the region, we flatten portions of the chickpea mixture into patties directly in the skillet, instead of shaping them into balls. This creates more surface area for browning and speeds the cooking. To begin, we whisk an egg with paprika, cinnamon, cumin, salt and pepper, then add the chickpeas, mashing them with a potato masher until they are broken down but not completely smooth.

I skipped browning the meatballs and poached them instead in a broth of Sungold tomatoes. It’s not quite peak tomato season, but Sungolds and cherry tomatoes are there for you with their reliable concentrated flavor that some of the big tomatoes are still lacking this early in the season. Ladle three or four albóndigas and broth into each of four to six shallow bowls. Top with cabbage, cilantro and onion; serve with lime wedges on the side. The microwave instructions on the back of the package are for the stated specific number of meatballs and may vary depending on meatball variety and size.

Toss them in, they will keep tender and punch up the spring flavors. The breadcrumbs combined with the other ingredients help the albóndigas retain moisture.

Feta and herbs are mixed in, and the mixture is shaped into balls and transferred to the refrigerator to chill for 15 minutes, which helps them hold together in the skillet. Once smashed into a nonstick skillet, let the delicate keftedes cook undisturbed until they form a golden brown crust, and flip them only once. These chickpea patties are great with a simple salad, or tuck them into pita with vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, cucumber and radishes. Hummus and Lubia green beans with tomatoes are also offered. Rinse 1/2 cup uncooked long grain white rice in cool water and drain well.

Place them on a medium baking sheet, and place in the fridge to firm up for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large stockpot over medium low. Add onion and ½ teaspoon salt; cook until softened, stirring often so the onion doesn’t brown, 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant and softened, 2 minutes. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring, until slightly darkened in color, 2 minutes.

You may be wondering if you have to cook the rice first before adding it to the meatballs. Cooking the rice first just adds an extra step to the process, and I didn’t find it necessary. Using uncooked rice allows the rice to cook at the same time as the meatballs and soak up all the seasoning and flavors from the dish. “Meatballs don’t always have to be meat,” writes Paola Briseño-Gonzalez in her latest story for L.A. Then she gives us a recipe she developed for brothy shrimp meatballs with Sungold tomatoes. Hanna House: A Frank Lloyd Wright House You Can Tour

hanna house

In 2012, the Florida Southern College Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior for being the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. Wright's work isn't all in the Los Angeles area.

Famous owners

The Hannas asked Frank Lloyd Wright to design an inexpensive house for their growing family. His solution was a glass-fronted collection of hexagon-shaped spaces surrounding a brick chimney. The Hannas thought it would cost about $15,000, but ended up instead with a price tag of $37,000. After I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to travel for a few months, so I secured a part-time job that could be done remotely.

Frank Smith Bank Building

Abandoning for the first time the square or rectangle in favor of the hexagon for the grid and plan, Wright found a new freedom and flexibility in the Hanna House. Walls joined at 120-degree obtuse angles create an interior of fluid space and unrestricted views. The house grew through successive additions to encompass 4,825 square feet. It is owned by Stanford University, which completed a restoration of the house in 2000.

It was Wright’s first non-rectangular design and… it drove the construction crews absolutely nuts. There isn’t a ninety-degree anywhere in the house. But the beauty of the hexagonal geometry in a seemingly un-geometric structure is simple and breathtaking. The only real problem was in the roof. Apparently not originally installed correctly, it — like many of Wright’s roofs — leaked profusely. The Louis and Annette Kaufman Remodel, 835 Westholme Avenue, Los Angeles CA.

Sold in 1993 to Ronald Patterson. Sold in 2004 to Martin Stuart Henderson. Sold in 2006 to actor Scott Caan. Deeded in 2014 to the 2049 Oakstone Trust, controlled by Caan.

The guest house is located in the back and slightly higher up the hill. This is where the full-time caretaker of the house lives nowadays. It has the same floor-to-ceiling segmented windows as the main house. As in almost any of Wright‘s homes, the chimney, which in this particular project is, of course, hexagonal, acts as a central core. Includes 92 volumes of materials documenting design, construction and publicity. The house, built along a branch of the San Andreas Fault, was significantly damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, due mainly to the structural failure of the central chimney and tower.

While it may be bigger than it looks from the street, it's the smallest of all Wright's textile block homes at about 1,200 square feet. It has an entrance, a living room, and kitchen on the main floor, with two bedrooms, a lounge, and a bath downstairs. The Samuel Freeman House is one of three textile block houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in the Hollywood Hills in the 1920s. The external roof is made of concrete, and several hexagonal modules have been built on top of it to house plants and protect the old oaks on the property.

Wright designed a gasoline station for the Broadacre City project in the 1930s, Wright approached Best Oil company owner, Ray Lindholm, a former client, with the idea of building a gas station in his hometown. The house was designed in 1936 for Stanford University professor Paul Hanna, his wife Jean, and their five children. This house, nicknamed “Honeycomb House,” is based on hexagonal geometry, with no right angles in the floor plan. This radical experimentation allowed Wright to explore open spatial planning.

The Rosenbaum House is a single-family house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and built for Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum in Florence, Alabama. A noted example of his Usonian house concept, it is the only Wright building in Alabama, and is one of only 26 pre-World War II Usonian houses. The Hanna Houseis built primarily of native redwood and San Jose concrete, brick andglass. In fact, there is no paintpresent in the house as all exposed surfaces are comprised of those fourmaterials. Wright, as he usually did, blurred the lines between interior and exterior spaces. Built on 1.5 acres, thesingle-story house features numerous tile terraces, built-in furnishings, anopen floor plan and a central clerestory.

Wright's initial plans called for flat terrain, but the lot the Hannas purchased was hilly. Cost overruns meant that the original $15,000 price tag ballooned to over $37,000 ($784,194 adjusted for inflation). Additionally, the Hannas discovered that their lot encompassed a portion of the San Andreas Fault. Wright, whose Imperial Hotel had survived the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, was undaunted.[4] Unfortunately, the home was severely damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Wright's Usonian houses were designed for middle-income families. They featured indoor-outdoor connections and were often built in an "L" shape.

A Modern House Built From 900 Concrete Blocks

From that process, it is then taken to the work site, and used. This particular process is easy and effortless, with a very small carbon footprint, which has contributed greatly to the popularity of modern concrete homes. Usually, though, concrete homes are made in much the same way that regular houses are made. From the concrete that is created, it is used to follow a blueprint that is very similar to a blueprint for a regular, wood-frame house. If you live in an area with a high water table, then using concrete blocks for your basement can lead to seepage and water damage.

Concrete Homes and Home Building

They only show up years after the home is purchased – in the form of lower maintenance costs and lower energy bills. So, to be sure you make the right home buying decision, always ask the seller or builder what type of construction is behind that beautiful exterior. Today’s concrete home benefits greatly from the progress that has been made in home insulation over the past 20 years.

With tilt-up concrete, the wall panels are also cast, but the casting is done on site. This method required a fairly wide-open site that can accommodate tilting the walls into place. Once properly positioned, the walls are connected to the rest of the structure. “The biggest misconception is ‘I’m going to live in a cave.’ The reality is if you were to drive past concrete homes, you couldn’t tell any difference.

This will need to be countered with quality waterproofing material and paint. Once appropriate drainage is installed around the home and interior waterproofing is complete, you should not have a problem with flooding. Concrete block typically comes in a smooth finish, but can also be found in a more decorative, split finish that many people find more attractive. You can also install siding over a concrete block home with the proper tools, so the exterior of a concrete block home can look modern, trendy, or traditional. There are a number of reasons why using concrete blocks may suit your project, your area of the country, and your needs.

It’s made entirely of precast concrete modules and building it was like paying with Lego blocks. In some areas, the walls have gaps and this intentional design was chosen in order to create a semi-transparent structure that filter the daylight and lets it get through inside the house. The mass of the concrete slows down the passage of heat or cold moving through the wall. With the same insulation, a concrete home stays warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Since leaks account for a large percentage of energy loss in the home, concrete homes enjoy savings in energy consumption.

The Ennis House is unusually monumental and vertical for a Wright residence, but when the architect completed it in 1924 he immediately considered it his favorite. Even if you only want to pour a basement with ICF, it still insulates better and goes up faster than traditional methods. Because the forms stay in place, ICF takes less time to install and, as such, usually costs less than poured concrete.

In fact, researchers at the National Wind Institute of Texas Tech University found that the strength of concrete walls can withstand 250-mile-an-hour winds and flying debris. Fire-resistant concrete walls more effectively resist damage from fire and limit the spread of flames, compared to wood and steel. While filling a cinder block wall is not always necessary, adding either sand or poured concrete to the voids adds strength and stability to the wall.

First, it’s an inspiration for other projects because of the way it overcomes the neighbors blocking the sea view. The architects made sure that the house took full advantage of its location. And especially the views by elevating the building 1.3 meters above the ground. Full-height windows and a green roof terrace allow the house to blend in and open up to the vast outdoors. Look at Konieczny’s Ark, a project developed by KWK Promes in Krakow, Poland. All of the home’s interior equipment is also made of concrete, and that includes the countertops in the kitchen.

Dry Stack Concrete Block House Construction

According to Spider Tie, their system uses plastic ties to hold the forms together, costing one-sixth the cost of a traditional ICF house. Spider Tie houses may be a good budget-friendly option for those seeking the durability and modern look of concrete homes without the high price point. You almost certainly want to hire a pro to build a concrete house, even if you opt for cinder block construction instead of poured or ICF. It's essential to ensure your walls and foundation are as perfectly aligned and structurally sound as possible.

Cement is only one ingredient in concrete, so you can’t build a house with cement alone since it’s just a binder. But if you’re talking about cement as part of concrete, this costs around $130 to $200 per square foot. While a concrete tile roof costs between $10 and $20 per square foot, pouring a flat roof starts at $4 to $6 per square foot.

All of this translates into a concrete housing costing less to own than a wood-frame or wood veneer home. One more type of concrete construction to know is autoclaved aerated concrete. If you can imagine baking with concrete, that is kind of what happens with autoclaved aerated concrete. One cool feature of removable form concrete is that it is easy to texture it.

The presence of VOCs in a home can lead to headaches, nausea, sinus irritation, and damage to internal organs. You’ll have fewer health issues with respiratory infections and immune system disorders with this structure compared to traditional building options. Disaster-resistant Fox Blocks ICF reduce the need for expensive repairs or even rebuilding after a natural disaster, like a wildfire or hurricane.

The lack of thermal resistance and the complexity of concrete block construction make ICF the best way to construct below and above grade walls for any home. Both methods furnish many of the benefits of concrete house construction. However, the complexity of concrete block construction and its lack of thermal resistance make ICF the best way to construct a concrete home.

11 Benefits of Concrete House Construction

You won’t get too many exotic designs with this building material since it is a pre-molded block. That means the productivity of some construction crews may be limited if you insist on this material since they might not have experience working with it. Also, builders can easily adjust the concrete walls for a home during the construction process without delaying production. Concrete houses provide healthy environments with fewer airborne allergens, molds, and toxins than most wood-frame houses.

Exterior

Flat poured roofs have grown in popularity as a modern home trend. According to the Insulating Concrete Form Association (ICFA), ICF homes are being built all across North America, in virtually every U.S. state and Canadian province. In the Northeast, upper Midwest and Canada, ICF homes are allowing homeowners to achieve greater energy efficiency and eliminate cold drafts. Along the Eastern Seaboard and Gulf Coast, ICF homes are valued for their resistance to hurricane-force winds. In the Southwest, ICF homes keep their occupants much cooler in the summer.

Concrete Homes and Home Building

The house is a U-shaped layout, allowing it to maintain the neighboring structure’s privacy and remain open towards the view. The palette of materials used throughout the project emphasize the landscape and scenery. Making a house look natural in its setting like it grew on the plot is no easy task. Yet architect Tatiana Bilbao did a great job designing this family home in Mexico City.

They designed the house on four levels with a rooftop pool that cantilevers nine meters to the South-West. They designed it this way so that you can admire the views of the sea while relaxing on the terrace or swimming in the pool, which, by the way, has a glass bottom. This house that tries to close itself off as much as possible in respect to the street and the neighbors. Moarqs + OTTOLENGHI blends concrete and glass to achieve this contrasting combination. This solution also reduced the landslide risk as rainwater flowed under the house.

The exposed concrete serves as the home’s exterior, interior walls and flooring. The home, built in 2021, offers 90 m2 of space and a simple design that meets all of the couple’s needs. Nearly 90 percent of us have one to consider fire, wild fires, seismic, or severe winters. His ICF home in Harrison County, MS, survived the 28-foot storm surge and 125-mile-per-hour winds of Hurricane Katrina when the house was only 85 percent completed. In Canada, the growth rate of ICF homes is exceeding even that of the U.S., spurred by government programs to encourage the construction of more energy-efficient housing. ICFs and concrete are an unappealing food source for termites, carpenter ants or rodents that often dine on or reside in wood-framed walls.

ICF and Concrete House Plans

You’ll also want to consider running your utilities through specific access points that get put into the structure during its construction to lessen the impact of this potential disadvantage. The cost of using concrete blocks instead of wood framing and drywall can be up to three times higher in some regions. The steel reinforcing rods that get used with concrete block homes work well in regions that suffer from earthquakes. A wet mixture of sand, cement, and small rounded gravel can get poured into the base to stabilize the reinforcements for a small cost. When it cures, then it hardens to give the structure an incredible amount of strength.

These changes all cost builders more time and money and a higher possibility for errors during construction. A concrete block house ranges from $180 to $250 per square foot. Sometimes referred to as "cinder blocks," this house type involves layering premade blocks and filling in gaps with mortar. Cinder block walls cost more than poured concrete since stacking blocks is more labor-intensive. A concrete house costs $160 per square foot on average to build.

Design Flexibility

Whether you’re looking for a modern one story home or a two story craftsman, browse through our wide selection of concrete floor plans to find a home you love. The exploding interest in "green," or environmentally friendly, building products and practices has accelerated the demand for sustainable home construction. Homeowners planning to build or purchase an ICF home may qualify for an Energy Efficient Mortgage (EEM), which allows borrowers to qualify for a larger mortgage as a result of the savings in energy expenses. This would give the owner the ability, for example, to invest more in an ICF home because of the lower monthly heating and cooling bills.

However, that doesn’t account for the savings in insurance costs. Many insurance agencies have homeowners policies that are up to 25% for modern concrete homes. This is because of their resistance to things like tornados, earthquakes, fires, and hurricanes. In America, modern concrete homes are becoming very, very popular. This makes a lot of sense, especially since, according to Chemistry World Magazine, concrete is the most widely-used building material in the world.

They're quickly gaining popularity due to advanced building techniques, with prices comparable to wood structures and more general contractors near you who know how to build them. Some people call ICF homes "foam concrete homes" because the forms are made from polystyrene. Plans for a concrete house can be custom drawn by an architect familiar with concrete home construction. Or pre-drawn plans can be purchased online, starting at around $1,000. Because ICF walls use non-biodegradable materials, they are not vulnerable to rot or deterioration as is untreated lumber. The reinforcing steel, which is buried in and protected by the concrete, won't rust or corrode.

The gravel- or sand-filled cores also serve as a minor insulator (although we do recommend installing rigid foam insulation in addition to the wall). You can add rebar and other reinforcement products to a concrete block to add to this benefit. Insulation can get mixed into the pre-molded blocks to fill its open cavities to reduce the need for interior improvements. Please contact the Pros at Fox Blocks for more tips on the benefits and best ways to build a concrete house. The Fox Blocks wall system, with a Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of STC 45-50+, significantly reduces the transfer of sound from the exterior to the inside of the house.

The project is a five-sided concrete block that naturally emerges from the hillside. Each block is strategically oriented to capture and frame different landscape parts. The design strategy was to have a more open ground floor and close the first floor making it private. But the difference is that there’s a concrete shell that wraps around the upper floor.

It’s no accident that concrete is the material of choice for modern-day fortresses and disaster shelters. This strong, durable material stands up to the fury of nature…including the more subtle threats of rot, rust and termites. Today’s strongest residential wall systems are made of concrete. Next on our list of concrete construction types for cement houses is precast concrete.

Cora's Restaurant

One of the top features at White House Hotel is its lovely outdoor pool with gulf views. The pool isn't heated, but it’s quite spacious and offers bar service on summer weekends. It also has an adjacent hot tub and lots of comfy seating surrounding it on an expansive patio. The fitness center is open 24/7, but it’s sparsely equipped with only two pieces of cardio equipment and free weights. A free continental breakfast is served daily in the lobby, and coffee is free all day.

While establishing his new law practice, Cora began accepting boarders into their home. As time went on, her side project became more and more popular to the point she and her husband acquired the home next door; eventually growing into a row of seven Victorian homes. Their next move was to join two of the buildings creating  a lobby, dinning room and ballroom; all with balconies adorned with huge columns overlooking the scenic beach. With the continued success of Cora White’s efforts, she and her two sons, Walter and John, teamed with architect George B. Rogers, designer of the Bellingrath Garden’s house in Alabama, to build two additions that are now the center and east wings. The White House Hotel’s name could easily have been inspired by her stately white façade and imposing Corinthian columns, which evoke images of a presidential mansion.

As fresh-cut flowers from the Hotel’s own hothouse graced the dining room tables, the White House chef could rely on "home raised vegetables and home raised, milk fed chickens," supplied by a farm and poultry yard located on the back of the Hotel grounds. Under the supervision of prominent architect George B. Rogers, who also designed Alabama’s famous Bellingrath Garden’s house, two large Spanish Colonial annexes were built in 1927 and 1929. These additions, which featured a private tiled bath for every guest room, now form the Center and East Wings of today’s imposing White House Hotel.

One of the few mentions came from Kelly O’Donnell, president of the correspondents’ association, who briefly noted some 100 journalists killed in Israel’s 6-month-old war against Hamas in Gaza. In an evening dedicated in large part to journalism, O’Donnell cited journalists who have been detained across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich in Russia and Austin Tice, who is believed to be held in Syria. The family story goes that about half of the relatives and friends which had always shown up did not reply nor did they appear in Biloxi that summer.

From the beautifully decorated lobby, elegant bar and white arches out front, this hotel screams classy from your first step onto the front porch. The White House Biloxi has a history dating back to the late 1800s, yet opened its doors again 5 years ago under its current management. The on-site restaurant is named after the original owner of the hotel; Cora White, and the hotel is the perfect mix between old heritage and modern amenities. You know I love a hotel with a story, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the White House. The White House Hotel, located on the beach along Hwy 90 in Biloxi, MS, is a historical hotel dating back to the 1890’s. Originally the home to Walter White, a Gulf Coast lawyer and later a Circuit Court judge, and his wife Cora.

Cora's Boarding House

The boarding house would not be for just the summer visitors but for year long guest. Her decision was made during a winter month and by early spring she had her list made for the cost of just a room or room and board. She had the price sheets printed up and she mailed to all that had been coming down for the summer. She also included on the list that reservations should be made early in order to have a room available for their arrival date on the coast.

Shaded by venerable oaks while commanding a panoramic Gulf view, this Grande Dame once reigned as the crown jewel of the Mississippi coast. Now sadly deteriorated, the White House Hotel still speaks to passerby of a glamorous age. With the help of several federal and state financial incentives, plans are underway to save this treasured landmark. Thus was the start of what was to become a very well known hotel and golf course,The White House Hotel."

Besides the weather, other tourist attractions included seafood restaurants, swimming, golf, schooner races, sailing to offshore islands, and recreational fishing. During this period of economic expansion, grand hotels were constructed along the Mississippi Gulf Coast to accommodate businessmen, tourists, and transient workers. Most of these grand hotels no longer exist; and of the two structures that were still standing after the first decade of the 21st century, neither served as a lodging establishment. Together, these grand hotels represented an important era in the history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast throughout the 20th century. This mansion-like, landmark hotel that’s surrounded by towering oaks dates back to the 1890s when it was originally a boarding house.

Celebrities included Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm and Chris Pine. To get inside Saturday’s dinner, some guests had to hurry through hundreds of protesters outraged over the mounting humanitarian disaster for Palestinian civilians in Gaza. They condemned Biden for his support of Israel’s military campaign and Western news outlets for what they said was undercoverage and misrepresentation of the conflict. Within a month after its formal opening in 1926, the hotel was filled to capacity.

During the 1940s, the original owner operated a casino in the hotel, even though gambling was not technically legal in Mississippi. Ownership changed hands through the years, and gambling was phased out in the 1950s. The hotel developed into a resort and tourist destination with a golf course and marina. When gambling was legalized in Mississippi in the 1990s, the hotel and 260-acre (105 hectares) resort was acquired by President Casinos and became the President Casino Broadwater Resort. In July 2005, the President Broadwater Hotel closed its doors as a result of bankruptcy proceedings.[25] The next month, the hotel was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina’s tidal surge and was demolished in 2006. The historic property offers units of different sizes, yet all of the standard rooms we saw (King, Queen, and Double Queen) were comfortably sized.

However, the Hotel was actually named after popular long-time owner Walter A. White, a Mississippi lawyer who moved to the Gulf Coast in 1890 and would later be appointed as a Circuit Court Judge. Mr. White purchased the Hotel’s main property, originally the site of the successful Gorenflo Oyster Company, in the aftermath of a disastrous 1893 hurricane, which destroyed the oyster packing plant and left a three-rigged schooner wrecked on its shoreline. Salvaging thousands of discarded oyster shells to fill in the enormous lot’s swampy lowlands, White created a gently sloping knoll that would anchor his new Victorian residence on high ground while commanding a panoramic view of the Gulf. He also planted the seven live oak trees that continue to graciously shade the White House Hotel today. Cora White, the wife of Gulf Coast lawyer and later Circuit Court Judge Walter White, began accepting boarders into their home on the Biloxi beach while Walter was establishing his new law practice. In 1910, two of the buildings were joined to create a lobby, a dining room and a ballroom.

It was one of only four historic Mississippi Coast hotels still standing, but abandoned, at the turn of the 21st century. The Margaritaville calls for a (duh) colourful margarita, whereas the White House is the perfect place for a classic martini (two of my favourite cocktails). Currently under construction once again, The White House Hotel is slated to open in May 2014, housing a 100 seat restaurant named after Cora White. More than two dozen journalists in Gaza wrote a letter last week calling on their colleagues in Washington to boycott the dinner altogether. Protest organizers said they aimed to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel’s military since the war began in October.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the quiet boutique property exudes an understated elegance. It has an upscale feel, as arriving guests are greeted by a row of stately white columns supporting the front porch. Other amenities include a guest computer and printer in the lobby, valet dry cleaning and laundry, concierge and room service, and free on-site parking at Wi-Fi throughout. After completing his new Biloxi waterfront home around 1895, Walter White could finally focus all his attentions on building his young law practice. To help make ends meet, his resourceful wife Cora began taking in boarders, mainly local schoolteachers. As White’s law practice grew, so did the number of tourists who were drawn to the invigorating beauty of Mississippi’s beaches. With visitors vying for the Coast’s few hotel rooms, Cora White saw a new opportunity...and by 1904 she had developed a steady clientele of summer guests. Mrs. White’s boarding business became so successful that she expanded by acquiring the Burke house next door.

She also added a generous front porch with classical pillars and a second floor balcony. The four-pearl White House Hotel offers a pleasant alternative to Biloxi’s large and busy casino hotels. This lovely boutique property dates back to the 1890s and exudes understated elegance, set on beautiful grounds. Highlights include a spacious outdoor pool, free breakfast, and a full-service restaurant and bar that's popular with locals and guests alike.

Units are generally quiet, with views ranging from the neighboring residential houses to partial and full water views. The White House Hotel itself is absolutely stunning, and the building stands beautiful and tall on the oceanfront in Biloxi/Gulfport. With the white columns, this hotel really is a grand dame, and the lobby and bar area follows suit. The interior is clean and classic (a word I can’t stop using in reference to the hotel), and I knew right away that I needed to get my hands on a martini and sit down on one of the couches by the window (I managed to do so within an hour). The White House Hotel is set a bit back from Beach Blvd. on the Gulf of Mexico, just across the street from a beach.

It felt like a pool in an old Hollywood movie, with comfortable lounge beds scattered around, striped towels and a nice tub (heated in the evenings) at the end. I would have loved to spend a whole weekend lounging there, listening to Lana Del Rey and drinking martinis, pretending I am in Bergdorf Blondes (one of my favourite books). Graber Olive House a hot spot for spooky activity in California

As Nan McEvoy's personal chef, chef Gerald Gass presides over an open, light-filled workspace in the Country Kitchen. Here he gives a California twist to the timeless Mediterranean tradition of cooking with olive oil. Once a jumble of dilapidated dairy barns and outbuildings, McEvoy Ranch today is a peaceful, beautiful compound of ranch houses, ponds and working barns that blend into the California landscape. Today the Graber Olive House is well known for their hand-picked, tree-ripened olives, as well as their cured black olives. It was normally open for tours, but that changed during the COVID pandemic, with the business hoping to eventually open back up to public tours.
