Kaldi's Social House Silver Spring

Behind the counter sits both a La Marzocco Strada MP and a Modbar AV system for pulling espresso. Coffee is ground on both a Nuova Simonelli Mythos and Mazzer Robur E grinders. As a small business owner, I knew that customer service requires a genuine connection between my co-workers and customers, so I invest in both sides. I takes my time to personally train and empower them so that the people who make the coffee are just as happy as those who order it. For me, this is not just an investment in the future of the coffee shop, but an investment in the community. Since opening in 2014, the staff has grown from four to over 30, and the store has expanded to more than double its original café space.

It feels like one spacious living room, with a long coffee bar in the center of the space like a hearth. Was reminded of my old review and had to revise it, since this place turned from a chill coffee house to a loud unpleasant quasi-dance club. The coffee, tea and food and food are still great but it’s not a nice place to hang out anymore. Kaldi’s Social House is a business with an emphasis on being welcoming, and a determination to build and support community.

Kaldi’s Social House

When the customer comes in, I don’t want them to think about getting coffee, but to think they are supporting the community…I want to be welcoming – I want to create relationships with customers. After months of preparation, Kaldi’s Social House opened in 2014. Located just off Georgia Avenue, Kaldi’s has large windows, with a glass door Inside, the lighting is muted, and the concrete floors are complimented by oversized leather chairs and wooden tables.

Entering the glass doors of the white brick building you are greeted by a warm and incredibly spacious cafe. Brick walls are painted gray and adorned with illustrations of coffee cups and wine glasses—this is a true day-to-night gathering space. The story of Kaldi and coffee in Ethiopia takes up a prominent space on one wall. In the center of the cafe sits a long coffee counter which divides the coffeehouse.

The front half of the shop is brightened by large windows and feels light and airy. Overstuffed leather chairs and long tables encourage communal seating. The back half feels more intimate and lounge-like, with deep armchairs, less natural light, and a gas fireplace set into the wall. The goal is to make the shop feel like a community living room. On both ends of the cafe are staircases which lead to a nighttime bar complete with a retractable glass roof. On the way out of the cafe patrons are reminded to “grow our community,” and “shop local,” by a decal near the door.

After immigrating from Ethiopia in 2008, Haile began to feel that there was a place for a coffeehouse that emphasized a social experience and was influenced by his Ethiopian roots. After opening Kaldi’s Coffee and becoming popular with the local residents, he soon found that there was room to keep his shop growing. The space has been expanded and renovated several times and has evolved into its current state as a daytime cafe and nighttime bar (follow them on Instagram for COVID updates). With a solid staff to hold down the fort in Silver Spring, Haile set his sights on opening a sister social house in Arlington, Virginia.

Food was dry and tough, definitely overcooked the beef. I don’t mind spending good money on good food, but I felt a bit of buyers remorse after eating here. Overpriced for the quality in my opinion. Regular galbi in Korea is cut differently.

It’s fitting that galbi jjim was previously reserved for Korea’s upper class. After all, Young-hee Shon’s restaurant, Seoungbukdong is named for a wealthy neighborhood in Seoul, home to the Presidential Palace. However, even though her steamed beef short rib may be stately, the food and service are warm and welcoming.

The meat is marinated with soy sauce and sugar, then steamed and braised with mild Japanese peppers. The savory dish is served in a homey bowl, scissor-cut so the chunks are easier to eat, and dusted with sesame seeds. Eat the galbi with mixed rice, which incorporates wild grains and red bean. Even though Soban’s setting is fairly simple, Si Woo Yoo has managed to build destination status with Angelenos who crave refined Korean food and people feting out-of-towners. The chef-owner is a master at building sauces and braising proteins in those sauces, whether the main ingredients come from the sea or land.

Galbi means “ribs” in Korean, and is a popular Korean dish served in many places. LA galbi is a style of galbi – barbecued beef short ribs – cut thinly (about ¼ inch thick) across the bones. Dwit Gol Mok (aka DGM) is a legendary Koreatown dive with a semi-hidden entrance, worn wood booths, and very few inches of wall that haven’t been tagged. The owners debuted a far nicer version, DGM Kisasikdang, in May 2016. Enter through the back, beneath a red awning, and find grey, orange and corrugated metal walls with two flat screen TVs. Don’t even think of uncapping a Sharpie in this setting.

Your best bet just might be their braised oxtail and short rib stew, which combines two cuts of tender beef - the largest portion could feed a football team. The scalding metal pot sears the chunks of meat and vegetable that settle at the base, to magical effect. The high standards clearly haven’t affected business - actors, K-pop stars, athletes and anonymous ballers continue to fill tables, which all tout charcoal grills. Their prime beef short rib is available marinated or undressed.

Nothing too bad to say and just normal tasting food.

Huge chunks of beef luxuriate in a fire-red sludge of soy sauce, sugar, garlic and “other vegetables,” which render the meat tender while imparting powerful flavor down to the bone. A sauce this concentrated calls for an adjacent bowl of steamed white rice. Genwa proved popular in Mid-Wilshire thanks to plentiful banchan and high-quality meat. The Restaurant Row spinoff is even fancier, with alternating white and red panels along La Cienega Boulevard, a pink façade, and wood-framed booths. Prime galbi is available in galbi tang (soup) and galbi jjim (braised with vegetables and herbs). Galbi are unseasoned short ribs for grilling.

Either way, they carve a diamond pattern in the meat, which maximizes tenderness. Wrap the results in lettuce with fermented bean paste, raw garlic and jalapenos, which pack a savory punch. The first time I tried LA galbi was about 20 years ago when I visited my sister living in LA. She prepared LA galbi for me and my family. I enjoyed the galbi a lot even though I was a little surprised to see the short ribs cut thinly and across the bone. Korean cuisine is a feast for the senses, combining bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and a rich cultural heritage.

From the tangy taste of kimchi to the juicy tenderness of bulgogi, Korean food has something to offer everyone. Whether you're a fan of spicy dishes or looking for a healthy meal option, Korean cuisine is a must-try for anyone looking to explore new and exciting flavors. Short ribs are popular in cuisines worldwide, but Korean kitchens have a particular knack for preparing galbi, as said ribs are known. In Korean (or Korean-American) culture, special occasions and celebrations call for galbi. Short ribs - frequently beef, but possibly pork - are braised, grilled, steamed, shredded and more, with delicious results. Read on and discover some of the best Korean galbi dishes in Los Angeles.

It is perfectly safe to consume our products if they have “freezer burn”. You should follow the heating instructions as you normally would. Keftedes are Greek meatballs, sometimes made with a mixture of chickpeas and sardines. For our vegetarian version, we substitute the sardines with feta cheese, which gives the keftedes a deeply savory note while keeping them meat-free. Based on the chickpea and sardine keftedes from “Smashing Plates” by London chef Maria Elia, this version is just as flavorful. In this recipe from “Tuesday Nights Mediterranean,” which features weeknight-friendly meals from the region, we flatten portions of the chickpea mixture into patties directly in the skillet, instead of shaping them into balls. This creates more surface area for browning and speeds the cooking. To begin, we whisk an egg with paprika, cinnamon, cumin, salt and pepper, then add the chickpeas, mashing them with a potato masher until they are broken down but not completely smooth.

I skipped browning the meatballs and poached them instead in a broth of Sungold tomatoes. It’s not quite peak tomato season, but Sungolds and cherry tomatoes are there for you with their reliable concentrated flavor that some of the big tomatoes are still lacking this early in the season. Ladle three or four albóndigas and broth into each of four to six shallow bowls. Top with cabbage, cilantro and onion; serve with lime wedges on the side. The microwave instructions on the back of the package are for the stated specific number of meatballs and may vary depending on meatball variety and size.

Toss them in, they will keep tender and punch up the spring flavors. The breadcrumbs combined with the other ingredients help the albóndigas retain moisture.

Feta and herbs are mixed in, and the mixture is shaped into balls and transferred to the refrigerator to chill for 15 minutes, which helps them hold together in the skillet. Once smashed into a nonstick skillet, let the delicate keftedes cook undisturbed until they form a golden brown crust, and flip them only once. These chickpea patties are great with a simple salad, or tuck them into pita with vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, cucumber and radishes. Hummus and Lubia green beans with tomatoes are also offered. Rinse 1/2 cup uncooked long grain white rice in cool water and drain well.

Place them on a medium baking sheet, and place in the fridge to firm up for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large stockpot over medium low. Add onion and ½ teaspoon salt; cook until softened, stirring often so the onion doesn’t brown, 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant and softened, 2 minutes. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring, until slightly darkened in color, 2 minutes.

You may be wondering if you have to cook the rice first before adding it to the meatballs. Cooking the rice first just adds an extra step to the process, and I didn’t find it necessary. Using uncooked rice allows the rice to cook at the same time as the meatballs and soak up all the seasoning and flavors from the dish. “Meatballs don’t always have to be meat,” writes Paola Briseño-Gonzalez in her latest story for L.A. Then she gives us a recipe she developed for brothy shrimp meatballs with Sungold tomatoes. Hanna House: A Frank Lloyd Wright House You Can Tour

hanna house

In 2012, the Florida Southern College Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior for being the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. Wright's work isn't all in the Los Angeles area.

Famous owners

The Hannas asked Frank Lloyd Wright to design an inexpensive house for their growing family. His solution was a glass-fronted collection of hexagon-shaped spaces surrounding a brick chimney. The Hannas thought it would cost about $15,000, but ended up instead with a price tag of $37,000. After I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to travel for a few months, so I secured a part-time job that could be done remotely.

Frank Smith Bank Building

Abandoning for the first time the square or rectangle in favor of the hexagon for the grid and plan, Wright found a new freedom and flexibility in the Hanna House. Walls joined at 120-degree obtuse angles create an interior of fluid space and unrestricted views. The house grew through successive additions to encompass 4,825 square feet. It is owned by Stanford University, which completed a restoration of the house in 2000.

It was Wright’s first non-rectangular design and… it drove the construction crews absolutely nuts. There isn’t a ninety-degree anywhere in the house. But the beauty of the hexagonal geometry in a seemingly un-geometric structure is simple and breathtaking. The only real problem was in the roof. Apparently not originally installed correctly, it — like many of Wright’s roofs — leaked profusely. The Louis and Annette Kaufman Remodel, 835 Westholme Avenue, Los Angeles CA.

Sold in 1993 to Ronald Patterson. Sold in 2004 to Martin Stuart Henderson. Sold in 2006 to actor Scott Caan. Deeded in 2014 to the 2049 Oakstone Trust, controlled by Caan.

The guest house is located in the back and slightly higher up the hill. This is where the full-time caretaker of the house lives nowadays. It has the same floor-to-ceiling segmented windows as the main house. As in almost any of Wright‘s homes, the chimney, which in this particular project is, of course, hexagonal, acts as a central core. Includes 92 volumes of materials documenting design, construction and publicity. The house, built along a branch of the San Andreas Fault, was significantly damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, due mainly to the structural failure of the central chimney and tower.

While it may be bigger than it looks from the street, it's the smallest of all Wright's textile block homes at about 1,200 square feet. It has an entrance, a living room, and kitchen on the main floor, with two bedrooms, a lounge, and a bath downstairs. The Samuel Freeman House is one of three textile block houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in the Hollywood Hills in the 1920s. The external roof is made of concrete, and several hexagonal modules have been built on top of it to house plants and protect the old oaks on the property.

Wright designed a gasoline station for the Broadacre City project in the 1930s, Wright approached Best Oil company owner, Ray Lindholm, a former client, with the idea of building a gas station in his hometown. The house was designed in 1936 for Stanford University professor Paul Hanna, his wife Jean, and their five children. This house, nicknamed “Honeycomb House,” is based on hexagonal geometry, with no right angles in the floor plan. This radical experimentation allowed Wright to explore open spatial planning.

The Rosenbaum House is a single-family house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and built for Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum in Florence, Alabama. A noted example of his Usonian house concept, it is the only Wright building in Alabama, and is one of only 26 pre-World War II Usonian houses. The Hanna Houseis built primarily of native redwood and San Jose concrete, brick andglass. In fact, there is no paintpresent in the house as all exposed surfaces are comprised of those fourmaterials. Wright, as he usually did, blurred the lines between interior and exterior spaces. Built on 1.5 acres, thesingle-story house features numerous tile terraces, built-in furnishings, anopen floor plan and a central clerestory.

Wright's initial plans called for flat terrain, but the lot the Hannas purchased was hilly. Cost overruns meant that the original $15,000 price tag ballooned to over $37,000 ($784,194 adjusted for inflation). Additionally, the Hannas discovered that their lot encompassed a portion of the San Andreas Fault. Wright, whose Imperial Hotel had survived the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, was undaunted.[4] Unfortunately, the home was severely damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Wright's Usonian houses were designed for middle-income families. They featured indoor-outdoor connections and were often built in an "L" shape.

This particular process is easy and effortless, with a very small carbon footprint, which has contributed greatly to the popularity of modern concrete homes. Usually, though, concrete homes are made in much the same way that regular houses are made. From the concrete that is created, it is used to follow a blueprint that is very similar to a blueprint for a regular, wood-frame house. If you live in an area with a high water table, then using concrete blocks for your basement can lead to seepage and water damage.

They only show up years after the home is purchased – in the form of lower maintenance costs and lower energy bills. So, to be sure you make the right home buying decision, always ask the seller or builder what type of construction is behind that beautiful exterior. Once properly positioned, the walls are connected to the rest of the structure. “The biggest misconception is ‘I’m going to live in a cave.’ The reality is if you were to drive past concrete homes, you couldn’t tell any difference.

It’s made entirely of precast concrete modules and building it was like paying with Lego blocks. In some areas, the walls have gaps and this intentional design was chosen in order to create a semi-transparent structure that filter the daylight and lets it get through inside the house. The mass of the concrete slows down the passage of heat or cold moving through the wall. With the same insulation, a concrete home stays warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Since leaks account for a large percentage of energy loss in the home, concrete homes enjoy savings in energy consumption.

In fact, researchers at the National Wind Institute of Texas Tech University found that the strength of concrete walls can withstand 250-mile-an-hour winds and flying debris. Fire-resistant concrete walls more effectively resist damage from fire and limit the spread of flames, compared to wood and steel. While filling a cinder block wall is not always necessary, adding either sand or poured concrete to the voids adds strength and stability to the wall.

First, it’s an inspiration for other projects because of the way it overcomes the neighbors blocking the sea view. The architects made sure that the house took full advantage of its location. And especially the views by elevating the building 1.3 meters above the ground. Full-height windows and a green roof terrace allow the house to blend in and open up to the vast outdoors. But if you’re talking about cement as part of concrete, this costs around $130 to $200 per square foot.
